Some things to remember when you design a home page

There’s a story told by James Hetfield of Metallica about their first visit to my home country, Poland back in 1991 or so. I can only recall it from memory now but basically they didn’t even get a chance to leave their plane when a journalist run to them saying “Welcome to Poland, how do you like it?”. “We’re here less than a minute, what do you expect us to say?” they replied stunned adding a few f-words so typically for them.

I bet similar situations happen to many celebrities when they arrive to a place they haven’t visited before but what’s worse they also happen to website visitors.

New series starting next week: introduction to css for designers

In my last post I talked about outsourcing front-end development and how I believe this is a brilliant solution for many designers. Nonetheless I also know that many of you may want to give css coding a try. For those of you, but also for those who don’t really want to get into the coding thingy but want to discover how it all works I am starting a new series to introduce the secrets of front-end development.

About a trap that you don’t want to fall into

Let’s imagine a simple scenario. What if you could draw a site just in a same way as you normally would with any other project and make it work straight away, with just a click of a button? Without having to worry about coding it, browser compatibility issues and many other aspects of web design that usually cause endless problems and headaches. Wouldn’t it actually be great? Would you not be at least slightly tempted by this?

Unfortunately when it comes to web design things are never that easy. I have actually seen many graphic designers falling into a trap of such thinking and as a result deciding on using Flash to create simple html sites. Of course those sites contain hardly any code apart from the one that flash outputs while publishing the movie. And even that code is not always to a standard required from a professional website.

Yet those sites are easy to create and thus are very tempting from a designers point of view. All that you need to learn is how to create artwork in Flash, which with it’s current integration into the CS suite is now easier than ever.

Why it is important to design well but communicate first

As many of us I love browsing the web and in most cases I wouldn’t be randomly jumping from site to site but rather looking for a specific information. And as I generally won’t get satisfied with Google’s first three search results I continue digging in but not every site of the many I would visit will make me stay to explore it fully.

Those that will immediately end up in my bookmarks. But some are so confusing that I have to stop and think what my next move on the page will be. Sites like that usually make me to take a break or simply move on to another site. Just so that I do not lose reason.
